Common Optical Terminology
A Simple Guide to Eye Health Terms
Understanding eye health can sometimes feel overwhelming with all the medical terms involved.
To make things clearer, here are some commonly used terms in ophthalmology explained in simple language:
OphthalmologistA medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating eye conditions, including performing surgery. |
OptometristA healthcare professional who examines eyes, prescribes glasses and contact lenses, and can detect many eye diseases. Optometrists do not perform surgery. |
OpticianA trained professional who makes and fits prescription glasses and contact lenses, based on a prescription from an ophthalmologist or optometrist. |
RefractionA test that measures how light bends as it enters your eye, used to determine your prescription for glasses or contact lenses. |
Refractive ErrorsCommon vision problems such as myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia. |
CataractA clouding of the natural lens of the eye that causes blurry or hazy vision. |
GlaucomaA group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often related to high eye pressure, and can lead to vision loss if untreated. |
RetinaThe thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye that senses light and sends signals to the brain to create vision. |
CorneaThe clear, dome-shaped front surface of the eye that helps focus light. |
ConjunctivaThe thin, transparent tissue covering the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. |
MaculaThe central part of the retina, responsible for sharp, detailed vision (e.g., reading and recognizing faces). |
StrabismusA condition where the eyes are not aligned properly (sometimes called “squint” or “crossed eyes”). |
AmblyopiaAlso called “lazy eye” – reduced vision in one eye, usually developing during childhood. |
